English language requirements
All our teaching, learning materials, and assessments are in English, so to study at SRUC you will need to demonstrate proficiency in the English language.
If English is not your primary language, documentation of your English language proficiency is required to study at SRUC.
You will need to demonstrate this with an accepted English language certificate, taken no more than 24 months from your course start date.
Certain exceptions and specific English language exam requirements are listed below.
Exceptions
You do not need to prove your knowledge of English if you are from one of the following countries or territories, or you have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in one of them:
Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, the British overseas territories, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Malta, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, UK or USA
You also do not need to prove your knowledge of English if you are a national of Canada
Accepted language qualifications
SRUC prefers the Academic IELTS English Exam as proof of English language level.
The required level of English language ability depends on your level of study:
- For college-level courses (such as NC), an IELTS score of 5.5 with a minimum score of 5.0 in each component is required.
- For entry to HNC/HND courses: IELTS 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.0 in each component. If you need a Student Visa to study with us, you will need to provide a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from a UKVI approved centre.
- For entry onto undergraduate degree courses, an IELTS score of 6.0 with a no subtests under 5.5.
- For postgraduate programmes, IELTS 6.0 with no subtests under 5.5 for all courses apart from the following exceptions: IELTS 7.0 with at least 6.0 in each subtest for courses taught in conjunction with the University of Edinburgh, IELTS 7.0 with at least 6.5 in each subtest for MSc Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare in conjunction with the University of Edinburgh.
For undergraduate or postgraduate students, we can consider other local qualifications as evidence of your English language proficiency. These are listed below. Please note that all English language certificates must have been taken within 24 months of the course start date.
