Susan Pirie

I did not take the traditional path to becoming a consultant. I studied International Business and Modern Languages at the University of Strathclyde; and lived and studied in Germany for a year as part of that course.

After working in the finance sector in Glasgow, I did a U-turn and studied for an MSc in Environmental Economics, Policy and Risk through Heriot-Watt University. Upon completion of that qualification, I joined SAC Kirkwall as a Records Administrator maternity cover.

18 years later I am still here! But now I am responsible for the management of the office, which currently serves clients throughout all of the Orkney Islands with a broad range of consultancy services, such as IACS, AECS, CAGS, carbon audits and ILMPs.

I am Orcadian born and raised and I am passionate about the importance of farming to Orkney's economy. Many of the businesses I deal with are family farms that support two or three generations. As such they are a vital part of the local economy in many areas of Orkney, which could very quickly become depopulated.

Away from work I seem to spend most of my time running my children from one activity to the next.
