I am an environmental professional based on Oban, Argyll, with more than 30 years’ experience in the field. This includes 20 years working in conservation associated with the farming industry, five years teaching environmental surveying and six years surveying in many areas of Scotland for the Nature Conservancy Council.
Currently I am Senior Conservation Consultant with SAC in Argyll. This involves advice and preparation of agri-environment and native woodland schemes.
Although agri-environment is the main core of my work I am also involved in Woodland Grant Schemes, Caledonian level II Surveys and Grazing in Woodland schemes which includes woodland monitoring.
Away from farming I have clients that include Scottish Water and Aggregate Industries, where I work with the quarry managers to implement the biodiversity benchmarking for which the quarry has been accredited. Further work includes terrestrial vegetation monitoring, habitat impact assessment, woodland surveys and vegetation restoration. I have been involved with the North Argyll monitor farm and Women in Agriculture groups.
I was brought up in a crofting community and originally trained in Biology and Ecology. Since leaving academia I have acquired a wide variety of experience including as Scientific Officer with the Nature Conservancy Council, teaching for the Scottish Wildlife Trust and as Conservation adviser with the Farming and Wildlife Advisory group.
I my free time I keep hens, run a polytunnel and am often out and about with a camera.
