My name is Heidi Douglas and for the last 17 years I have been working as an Animal Care and Veterinary Educator in Aberdeen. I am currently based at the Craibstone campus.
I qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2001 and, after being in practice for 10 years, made the decision to move back to Aberdeen before deciding on a career change. I started out as an instructor with Aberdeen College in 2006 and shortly afterwards became a lecturer. Although I find myself missing practice life, I love being able to share my knowledge on all aspects of caring for animals and, since the addition of the VN training, I now also enjoy hearing about student experience in practice. Throughout my career there have been a number of high points. The one I am most proud of is receiving a ‘Commended’ nomination in the ‘STAR’ awards. Here we were recognised for brining Veterinary Nursing to the North-East of Scotland in the form of the Level 3 Diploma. Since then I have also set up and run the BSc in Veterinary Nursing, alongside managing Animal Care courses within SRUC.
Over the years I have enjoyed watching both Animal Care and Veterinary Nursing grow and, although my current role will focus more on managing Animal Care courses, I will be working closely with all Veterinary teams.
Having completed the PG Certificate and Diploma in Veterinary Education I will be aiming to begin the MSc shortly. I have a particular interest in surgical nursing, theatre practice and exotic species. I enjoy reading, cycling, swimming, singing and long walks with the family and the dogs (Loki and Hugo). I also share a home with 2 cats (Mable and Jasper) and Victor the hooded rat.
