Hi I'm
Gavin Prentice
- Position: Senior Potato Consultant
- Location: North East Scotland
-
Expertise:
- Agriculture, Crops and Soils
I’m a Senior Potato Consultant within SAC Consulting, based primarily out of the Forfar office but also the Craibstone Campus in Aberdeen. I help advise and work with our SACAPP (SAC Consulting Association of Potato Producers) growers and corporate clients across the country. Known to the wider industry, I work and interact with partners on a range of potato related topics, specialising in seed potatoes. I have roots in agriculture with over 15 years of commercial experience in the trade.
As part of the potatoes team, we provide expert, independent advice backed by field trials. Investigating subjects such as cultivations, plant protection products, and particularly pest & diseases, to name but a few. We are also able to provide tuber disease identification via our crop clinic, giving advice on actions or management resulting from issues both in field and in store. As the only provider in Scotland and unique to SRUC, we hold training for potato roguers, run annually (for over 20 years), spotting potato diseases and variety identification.
Prior to joining SAC Consulting in 2024, I worked with two major seed companies. Starting my career with IPM Potato Group in 2009, I was responsible for allocation and dispatch of seed (7,000t+) annually, whilst learning about export markets, the seed potato classification scheme, logistics, and supply chains. A highlight was passing my field vegetable BASIS qualification on the job, acquiring knowledge around plant protection products, and joining the professional register.
More recently, I was with Agrico UK, a subsidiary of the large Dutch cooperative, working as a Technical & Procurement Manager. I helped the team with production planning, pre-basic multiplication, area contracts and ware trading. Career highlights include becoming a qualified drone pilot and yield benchmarking.
I’m a big football fan and enjoy (most of the time) watching my beloved Dundee United FC at Tannadice.
