After graduating from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Medicine in 2000 I worked in mixed practice in Aberdeenshire for six years. The work here covered everything from hamsters to horses although my focus was on the farm animal work of the practice. In 2006 an opportunity arose to join the SRUC Disease Surveillance Centre (DSC) in Perth, working as a Veterinary Investigation Officer (VIO). This role allowed me to focus primarily on farm animal diagnostics (mostly through post-mortem investigations) and on farmer education. In 2011 I achieved the RCVS Certificate in Cattle Health and Production and in the same year I became Centre Manager of the Perth DSC.

Throughout my time as a VIO I had developed an interest in improving both the functionality of the laboratory information management system (LIMS) software and the consistency of reporting activities across the VIO team. In 2016 this interest led me to be seconded onto a project to configure and implement a new LIMS across all areas of Vet Services. My work on the LIMS project has led in turn to more opportunities to explore the use of digital solutions to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Vet Services’ activities. This has developed into a full-time role and, with several further projects in the pipeline, looks likely to keep me busy for the foreseeable future!
