SRUC to suspend face-to-face group teaching

Scotland’s Rural College is suspending face-to-face group teaching from 6pm on Friday 20 March.

It follows Government advice on the Coronavirus outbreak.

Students will be contacted this week on how they can continue their studies at home.

In a message to students, Principal and Chief Executive Wayne Powell stressed that SRUC’s campuses remain open for one-to-one tutorials, while tutors and lecturers are available to support and guide them in person, via email, and on the phone.

SRUC’s halls of residence remain open, with special rooms in place should anyone need to self-isolate. All non-essential travel, including field trips, has also been suspended.

Meanwhile, SRUC’s Veterinary Disease Surveillance Centres and Hubs as well as testing laboratories remain open, along with the SAC Consulting offices throughout Scotland.

Prof Powell said a new webpage would help students, prospective students and customers stay up-to-date with any changes in what is a “fast-moving and complex situation”.

He added: “We are working within government guidelines to ensure both the welfare and safety of our students and colleagues together with ensuring business continuity.

“We have a brilliant team at SRUC, and I know that through our colleagues’ talent and expertise we are extremely capable of supporting our students, clients and stakeholders during this difficult time.

“This is not a closure of the institution. This is a temporary suspension of group teaching, as part of a phased and managed approach, which will help us to navigate through a difficult and unpredictable situation for SRUC.”
