SRUC seeks agri-businesses to take on students for placement projects

SRUC is looking for farms and agri-businesses across the country to take part in a new student placement programme beginning in September 2025.

Participating organisations will each be asked to host a final year BSc (Hons) student, who will complete 240 hours across the course of their time embedded in the workplace.

“We’re ideally looking for businesses from across the agricultural sector,” said Craig Davidson, Programme Leader for Agriculture. “Students will complete a managerial-level project for each respective business during their placement, which is meant to be of value to day-to-day operations.

“It’s a great opportunity to foster young talent, and also to gain fresh perspectives on, and innovative solutions to, everyday challenges that those in the sector face.”

Businesses taking part in the scheme will be offered support and training to maximise the potential benefits from the placements, with an online information session taking place on 15 January.

Open to all, this will explain more about expectations, requirements, benefits and what support will be offered to participants, and will feature a Q&A session.

Across the course of each placement, students will be given the opportunity to shadow the likes of farm managers, agronomists, nutritionists and consultants as the build the skills needed to succeed in industry.

They will each be required to identify an area in which to complete a managerial-level project which will be of genuine benefit to the host organisation. Whether maximising crop yields, delivering supply chain efficiencies or otherwise, it will be an invaluable opportunity for them to apply their skills and knowledge to real-world problems.

Flexibility around when the placements should be completed is being offered. It is expected that students will undertake them either alongside their fourth year of study, or during their summer break.
